Floating Leaves

The leaves loved telling one another their memories.
“Do you remember that great September wind?”
“And the blackbird that sang every morning?”
“And that ray of sunshine that kept us warm until evening?”
With every memory, they looked up.
The clouds carried them away.
But the water never agreed.
It bubbled between the stones.
The memories became blurred.
The colors faded.
The leaves looked at one another, unable to find their stories.
Then a current, stronger than all the others, swallowed them.
